Top 10 - The dangers of a romantic relationship at work

Inevitably, sometimes workplace collegial relationships end up turning into romantic relationships. Before diving headlong into a relationship with your work colleague, it’s good to know the dangers of such a relationship. Think carefully about what you have to gain and what you have to lose by mixing your career with your relationship!

Consider these risks when starting a romantic relationship with a colleague:

1. People will cheat.

Obviously, your other colleagues will realise what’s going on and will end up discussing your relationship in the absence of other topics. Your image may be damaged!

2. You could lose your job.

In some companies there is a clear policy against workplace relationships. Find out if this is the case in the company you work for, because one of you may have to transfer or look for a new job to avoid being fired.

3. It will be more difficult to remain objective.

The fact that your partner works with you will influence how you view your job, both for better and worse. Try to think with your head and not your heart when it comes to projects at work or your opinion of other colleagues.

4. This could hold you back from career advancement.

The HR department might want to put some distance between you and your partner, hindering your chances of advancement. In addition, you may not want to leave a company that no longer suits you if your partner still works there.

5. Competition arises between you.

Between colleagues, a little competition is normal, but it could create an ugly dynamic between you and your partner if one is promoted and the other is not.

6. Career-life balance could be upset.

It’s quite difficult to separate your personal life from your professional life and without dating a co-worker. So, part of your personal life is always with you at work, and you always have part of your job at home.

7. You will be judged.

Some people will judge you for your choices, especially if you’ve dated more than one co-worker, or if your partner’s career is more advanced than yours. It’s important to be discreet.

8. You may isolate yourself.

You and your partner may become a two-person group, and others may not feel comfortable interacting with you if you spend too much time together at the office. Try to bond with other people at work as well. You can even spend holidays together with other colleagues, in this way protecting your other work relationships.

9. You will share your successes and failures at work.

This is an important issue if the relationship is a serious one, because if the company runs into problems you will both be out of a job. You will have to set aside a serious amount in case you go from two salaries a month to none.

10. Your professional relationship could last longer than your personal one.

Breakups are hard, and you may not be able to face seeing each other every day afterwards at work. Before starting a relationship, discuss how you will work together in case the relationship doesn’t work out.
